The urban environment presents itself to us primarily as chaos, as a whirr of noise, smells and flashing images. In its totality, the experience of the city is an overwhelming compilation of infinite momentary spectacles and events.
The city speaks to us, night and day, with the voices and the actions of every citizen, transmuted into something different, both deafening and to which we are deafened.
Amidst the buzz of the city, waxing and waning, but never ceasing, there are sounds representative of individual lives. Can sound, then, act as a means through which to explore the diverse, myriad meanings of the city?
For the 2013 Beijing Design Week we created a participatory event designed to focus people's attention on the sounds of the city. On registering for the event, participants will be provided with a sound recording device and a kit which will include instructions and a set of four interpretable themes. Participants will then, whilst traveling the streets of Beijing, attempt to uncover—to excavate—sounds which they believe relate in some manner to the themes.
When participants return the recording devices, we will upload their recordings onto our sound installation, where each theme will have a dedicated booth in which a medley of recordings will play. The installation will develop into a comprehensive, participant-created set of themed soundscapes of the city.
